Climbing Wall

The Grand Park Community Recreation Center offers a 33-foot indoor climbing wall that caters to climbers of all skill levels. The facility provides both bouldering and roped climbing opportunities, with auto belay systems and top-rope setups available.

Hours

Climbing Wall

  • Monday – Friday: 6 AM – 8 PM
  • Saturday: 9 AM – 8 PM
  • Sunday: 9 AM – 5 PM

Closed Tuesday & Wednesday from 3:45 PM – 5:00 PM for After School Climbing Club

Instructor-Led Belay

  • Wednesday – Saturday : 5 PM – 7 PM
  • Sunday:  3 PM – 5 PM

Availability

Bouldering:
Open to all members and guests during operational hours and non-programed times.

Top Ropes & Auto Belays:
Available during operational hours and non-programed times to in-house belay-certified members and guests.

Belay Certifications & Private Lessons:
During belay hours or by appointment. Register at Grand Park Community Rec Center’s front desk.

Birthday Parties & Special Events:
Available by appointment on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Fill out a facility rental form to get started.

Belay Certification

Only belay certifications issued by this facility are accepted for use of the auto belays and/or top ropes.

This class teaches how to safely use the climbing wall’s top ropes with proper belay technique, in addition to safe auto belay use. Use of a belay device for rope feed and stop techniques are taught for a controlled belay. Climbers will learn how to correctly fit a harness, tie a proper figure 8 follow through knot, and basic climbing commands. After course completion, climbers will be certified to use the top rope and auto belays on our climbing wall.

Climbing Wall Skills Check & Belay Certification

Belay certification at the Grand Park Community Recreation Center is a pass/fail skills assessment.
Only certifications issued by this facility are accepted for use of the autobelays and top ropes.

To Pass, Climbers Must Demonstrate:

  • Ability to tie a proper figure-8 knot with follow-through from memory
  • Proper fitting and use of a climbing-specific harness (bring your own or use one of ours)
  • Clear verbal communication between climber and belayer
  • Proper underhand belay technique using an approved belay device (GriGri or ATC; bring your own or use one of ours)

Additional Information

If the certifying instructor determines that sufficient knowledge or technique is not demonstrated, the climber
will be required to complete a Belay Skills Clinic for an additional $10 prior to re-testing.

Upon successful completion, climbers will receive their Grand Park belay certification and may use the
autobelays and top ropes.

Auto Belay Certification

Climbers must be auto belay certified by a Grand Park Community Recreation Center climbing instructor in order to use the auto belays.

Climbing Wall Rules

Get Certified

  • You must be certified by FVMRD Staff to use the Auto Belays, and/or to belay on top-rope
  • To get certified, please inquire with the front desk

Be Respectful

  • Sanitized hands and shoes are required on the wall
  • Take turns and communicate with other climbers waiting to use the wall
  • NEVER climb under another climber
  • No running or horseplay in climbing area
  • Clean up after yourself

Always Perform Safety Checks

  • Check that your harness is free of wear and tear
  • If bringing your own harness, check that all buckles are double-backed
  • Check that your figure 8 knot follow-through has 5 sets of 2
  • Establish communication with your belay partner

Safe Bouldering

  • Always move mats directly under where you are climbing
  • Only climb up to 2X your height, unless working with a spotter
  • Clear bouldering mats of water bottles and other objects
  • Never walk or climb under a person on the bouldering wall
  • Do not climb on top of the bouldering wall

Manufacturer’s Weight Regulations

  • Minimum climber weight: 22lbs (10kg)
  • Maximum climber weight: 330lbs (150kg)
  • Scales are provided in the fitness area restroom if weight is in question

Required Safety Precautions

  • All Auto Belay users must be trained in the use of the Auto Belay by a qualified FVMRD employee
  • Ensure the carabiner is attached to the climbing loop(s) of harness, and the latch is fully closed with gate engaged prior to climbing
  • Ensure all loose items that may become tangled are tightened or removed before using the Auto Belay
  • Check Auto Belay operation before each climbing session by pulling out a 4′ section and allowing it to retract
  • Request assistance if Auto Belay fails to retract normally Check that your harness is correctly fitted and tightened Ensure carabiner latch is facing away from the climber
  • Never climb alongside or above the Auto Belay
  • Never start descent from above the Auto Belay
  • Prior to descent, ensure descent path and landing are free of people and obstructions
  • Always descend feet first using feet to fend off obstacles and prepare for landing
